This new attitude was nowhere more notable than on the sector of the Imjin River held by the British 29th Brigade. Despite the Brigade’s valiant efforts, the Chinese broke through their line. The four companies of the Gloucestershire Regiment fighting with the 29th Brigade were encircled by the enemy, but they still held out for three days. In the end, all but 39 of the soldiers in the Gloucestershire Regiment were killed or taken prisoner.

In the face of such determined resistance, the communist offensive came to a halt at the end of April, just short of Seoul. The Chinese and North Koreans are believed to have lost about 70,000 soldiers in nine days of fighting, compared with UN losses of about 7,000 soldiers. The Chinese made a renewed effort in mid May, but the offensive achieved little. The exhausted communist forces were soon once more withdrawing northward to the 38th parallel and beyond.
